Woolsey Mercantile Building Restoration Project

Woolsey Mercantile Building Restoration Project

Woolsey is the smallest town in Fayette County, but its residents had big dreams for the old mercantile building on Highway 92 South. The historic downtown building was gifted by Ms. Josephine Ballard to the Town of Woolsey about 15 years ago to be used “for the good of the community.” With the financial support of 2017 SPLOST funds, restoration of the old building was completed in September, 2018.

Attorney Ron Smith led the restoration efforts, volunteering his time as project manager. And now, after a long history as a store, a bank, perhaps even a jailhouse, the building has a new life as the city’s Town Hall and community center. It offers historic displays, a hub for town events and meeting space for civic groups, clubs, and social organizations — all while focusing on the values and future vision of the Town of Woolsey.
